Emily Day
BA (Psych/Educ), MA (Art Therapy), AThR
Emily Day is the first New Zealander graduate from New York University's Art Therapy Program. While studying, she interned in NYC public schools, at the New York Ear and Eye Infirmary, at GMHC - the world's leading provider of HIV/AIDS prevention, care and advocacy services, and with 9/11 First Responders. She has also designed and implemented short-term art therapy groups for economically disadvantaged and intellectually impaired adolescents in South Africa, and for homeless women and children in New Orleans. Currently, Emily provides art therapy sessions at after-school programs and a battered women's shelter. Her research has focused on cross-cultural art therapy, and she aims for increased social justice.
Having experienced and witnessed the profound transformative power of art therapy, Emily is enthusiastic about sharing it with others. She offers a safe, nurturing space for individuals, groups, and families to feel the benefits of creative expression - even if they have no experience with art or with therapy beforehand. She works with people to identify their needs, employ their strengths, and make positive changes in their lives. Her areas of interest and expertise include children, adolescents, LGBT, immigration, discrimination, depression and trauma.
